"You've heard the Ardainian tale of the Lucky Core Crystal, right? A core crystal swallowed by a monster--a marrin, usually."

Cause you're super cool :D thanks for being my friend <3

This has sat in my drafts one year!

I got around to cleaning it up yesternight, and uhhh... well, it's unbeta'd, so all mistakes are mine. Still, I hope you enjoy it.

"Just our luck, huh?" Kasandra asks as she dries her hair. There's too much pep in her voice. That's her; peppy.

"You don't say," Mythra responds drily as she searches for her own towel, which is... somewhere. She turns her back to Kasandra and continues searching. 'Just our luck' indeed. There'd been no clouds over the plains of Gormott--absolutely none--until they were met by a sudden downpour. 'Our' is pushing it. The luck is all--

'Be kind,' Pyra reminds her. Mythra rolls her eyes but listens anyway. Where is that towel?

"You can have mine," Kasandra offers.

Mythra sighs. There's a lot she wants to say in that moment. Unfortunately, none of it would be very kind. What she needs is to dry off and take a break. "No thanks," she tells Kasandra gently. Pyra claps proudly.

Kasandra hums. "Suit yourself."

And... finally! Why was her towel with the rest of Vale's stuff anyway?

'Girls' night,' says Pyra.

Ah yes, Girls'--

The alarm bells in Mythra's head go off and she quickly steps back from Kasandra and turns to face her. There's a terrible energy in the room; one that sets both Pyra and Mythra on edge and fills them with more than a little dread; the kind that only ever appears when Kasandra's mask slips over her face.

"Aegis." That's Kasandra's voice, but something tells Mythra that Kasandra isn't the one speaking. Is it... the mask?

"You," Mythra says, narrowing her eyes.

"Me," the mask says, spreading their arms with flourish.

Mythra's hand twitches. She'd always felt some apprehension whenever Morag handed Cassandra her shield hammer and the mask slipped on. That apprehension has increased tenfold now that she knows the mask can talk.

"Relax, I'm not here to cause any trouble."

Mythra eases up slightly, and that's only because Pyra thinks it'll lessen the chance of there being some sort of altercation. Still, Pyra doesn't think that chance will hit zero. Good. At least they both agree that the mask might be a threat. Whatever the case, the mask clearly approves of their caution.

"Who are you?"

Kasandra's feet shift and a blade of light materialises in Mythra's palm. The mask stills. They sigh. "You can call me Kas." Mythra raises a single eyebrow. A name is always useful, but not the answer she's looking for. Kas laughs. It's a chilling laugh. "I'm a good luck charm."

"A good luck charm?"

"Kasandra's good luck charm. As for anyone else, well..." Kas points outside the window. Lightning flashes over Gormott. The thunder that follows is louder than normal. Well then.

Mythra is feeling more and more tense. "And why do you--" she waves her hand vaguely at Kasandra. She isn't sure how to phrase the question. Pyra doesn't have any suggestions either. Still, Kas nods understandingly.

"You've heard the Ardainian tale of the Lucky Core Crystal, right? A core crystal swallowed by a monster--a marrin, usually." Mythra nods. Chasing that rumour hadn't been fun. "Well there's more to that tale. The core crystal wasn't just swallowed--the blade was used as a distraction. Driver and company saw it fit to leave her to the monsters as they made their escape. Kasandra was eaten alive trying to defend the life of a driver who couldn't care less if she lived."

"I..." Mythra doesn't know what to say. Pyra is silent too. That's disgusting.

Kas huffs. "Not that they made it either."

Mythra gives Kas a good look. There's something bitter about the reds, and the tri-toned eyes shine with something she can only call spite. Pyra clears her throat. Mythra voices her question. "Did you..."

A shrug. "People get what's coming for them, Aegis. You've been alive a while. You know that being abandoned and sacrificed isn't a one off for Kasandra. Some luck she's had..."

Mythra mulls over what Kas has told her. The one thing that sticks out to as odd is the talk of experiences. Experiences, plural. She narrows her eyes. "What are you?"

Kas waves her hand dismissively. "I'm a relic of the past--bringer of good luck, giver of spiteful curses--they called me monster. Of course they did." A pause. And then, quietly, "I was Kasandra's driver once."

There's a lot Mythra wants to ask, but... there's always later, Pyra reminds her. So she doesn't push.

"We'll keep her safe, promise," Mythra tells Kas seriously. Making promises she can't keep is a thing she strives not to do.

Kas visibly relaxes. "I'll hold you to that." Kas puts a hand to the muzzle of her mask and pushes it off of Kasandra's face. Thankfully, Pyra is up for a switch. Mythra has had enough for the evening.

Kasandra looks around the room, confused. "Did I... fall asleep?"

"It's been a tiring day," answers Pyra. She looks out of the window and frowns. Nia said that storms like this one could last a day or two. "Hopefully this lets up soon."

Kasandra turns to look out of the window as well. Pyra watches her fiddle with strap of her mask, eyes distant. "So you met them, huh."

Pyra nods.

"Please don't tell Morag. I'll talk to her myself."

Pyra nods again.

Kasandra turns to her and smiles. Small as it is, it's a beautiful smile. "Thanks Pyra, Mythra."

Pyra smiles back. "Don't mention it."

Outside, the downpour stops.

I headcanon that Kasandra is awakened by Morag.

Also, my headcanon about rare blades is that the thing that makes them most special is their connection to their past incarnations/awakenings. That's what this collection is about for the most part.

Also yes, Kas is older than the Aegis, perhaps even older than Klaus. How has Kas's Spirit survived so long? Spite and Luck.

And that's about it! Yeah. Hope you enjoyed.

As always,
Love,
John.
