He doesn't expect the empty space between reality to be bright. He thinks, "space is dark, right?" Well, no actually. It's not quite that simple. Think of Olbers' Paradox, or the fact humans can see light up until a specific point in which wavelengths shift (It's the Doppler Effect this time around).
He supposes that he knew this. He is a sci-fi flick freak.
Doesn't make it any less disorienting though.
The lone wolf has to count his blessings for now. Helmet? Check. Alive? Well, maybe not. Ares...?
