Partner is the best word. It's always been. The gender-defying part is obvious, as is the fact that even broad-minded scientists rarely speak of "brother programs" to go with "sister schools" and all the human like.

Siblings don't always work together, anyway. But partners? There's nothing there but the work. It's the very reason any two, or three, or more, are joined together.
