It's not for nothing that he chose to call himself Teach, rather than Orseus or Foreman. Colony Gamma has become his project not just as a line to hold but as a standard to uphold, a baseline from which for his students - for they are that, not subordinates or mere infantry - to grow.

Who else could cultivate Kyrie into a perseverant, straight-shooting force of commitment?

Who else could demonstrate to Zakir the calculating nature of earned trust?

Who else could humble Foots into broadening the scope of his forethought?

Taion has been, for the most part, taught already. Isurd has instilled a keen eye, despite the spectacles, commensurate with the consistently high rank of his colony.

(For a time, they called it Lame Lambda. Some colonies shelter when about to lose their commander to Homecoming. Lambda had no choice.)

There, evidence: Teach would rather his colony pull a serviceable Iron and cohere than strive for Steel and all fall apart.

Not that he blames Taion's strategic lineage for this. Not at all.

Not to say that you cannot display exemplary traits you may possess in the pursuits of off-seeing, combat training, or research data collection.

But you can brute-force feel your way through those things, acting alternately as a technician or as a grunt and answering with ardor from the heart. Leading by example, Teach does not allow himself to do that, anymore.
