Henri returned Adam's sardonic inquiry with an uncharacteristically scrupulous look. "Adam, I still have to go to America. My life is not over just because Lise has found happiness with someone else."

"That's what I mean. What about you?"

"'What about me'- what about you? Where is your next scholarship out of?"

Adam was a very crossfaced person, and Henri had never seen him look it more.

"Haven't tried the Manhattan School of Music yet."

"So do that."

"Suppose I should try to make something of myself."

Henri, departing: "You won't."
